Attorney Smith has over forty-five years of patent, trademark and copyright law experience which includes over thirty-five years of private practice legal experience in addition to corporate intellectual property positions at U.S. Philips, Litton Industries, General Electric, and United Technologies Corporation. This experience is in addition to 10 years of engineering experience at United Technologies, Cutler Hammer Airborne Instruments Laboratory and Pan American World Airways.

His experience includes personally prosecuting approximately 500 United States patents involving enormous technical diversity. In addition he has successfully completed licensing negotiations in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Far East and South America as well as litigated intellectual property matters in federal trial and appellate courts as well as in state courts and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

In addition to prosecuting U.S. and foreign origin applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and foreign patent offices his experience includes providing counseling on all phases of intellectual property law, including trademarks, trade secrets, copyrights and unfair competition including preparing patentability opinions, preparing validity and infringement opinions, and advising clients on litigation strategy related to intellectual property. His trademark experience includes trademark clearance opinions, application preparation and prosecution, and pursuing opposition and cancellation actions.

He has resolved many disputes without the costly involvement of litigation and has settled many litigated matters to avoid protracted proceedings and related costs. Attorney Smith has presented both legal and technical issues in a manner understood by the courts and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Attorney Smith is also an Assistant Professor at UCONN Law School.
